Wildcards is a popular shared world series from the 1987s-2024 (still ongoing). It’s a shared world series edited by George RR Martin and Melinda Snodgrass (still ongoing).

It is set in an alternate universe. After WW2, an alien virus called the Wildcard virus launched into the world. It kills 90% of those who contract it and mutates the remaining percentage. 9% survive but become Jokers, who develop minor or crippling physical conditions. The remaining 1% become Aces, who remain human or mostly human in appearance but develop superhuman abilities; Aces whose abilities are too trivial or specific to be generally valuable are called Deuces.[1]

1% are Aces — most look human, and all have superhuman abilities. Some are heroes, some villains.

The world keeps changing. The novels are about how they interact with them.

The novels are a hit. Over 40 authors wrote for it. Fans keep it alive through short stories and anthologies. There are TTRPG (Table Top RPG) supplements…
